Diagram A / Parts List & Layout

Preparing the Blanks

  • Cut 3/4" to 5/8" square blank to the length of the brass tube (add 1/16" for squaring off)
  • Drill an 11/32"-center hole lengthwise through the blank

  • Spread glue over the brass tube. Insert into the blank with a twisting motion to spread the glue evenly inside. Center the tube lengthwise inside the blank.
  • When the glue dries, square the ends of the blank. Use an 8mm barrel trimmer of a belt/disc sander to trim the wood down flush to the end of the brass tube.

Diagram B / Turning The Blank

Turning the Blanks

  • Place the stop bushing or use three or four spacer bushings onto the mandrel hand tight. Next, place one of the #PK-1185 bushings (wide dia. first) on the mandrel. Slide on the blank, then place the other bushing (narrow end firs) on the mandrel.
  • Thread on and hand tighten the lock nut to hold all items in place.
  • Slide the tail stock snug to the mandrel shaft, (do not over tighten, it could damage the mandrel)and tighten. Slide the stop bushing toward the blank or fill the space with a spare bushing and adjust for spacing. Lock in place.
  • Using a lathe chisel, turn the blank down flush with the bushings. Finish the blank with gradually finer grits of sand paper.
  • Finish the project with your choice of our fine polishes and waxes.

Diagram C - Assembly

Assembly

  • Line up finished parts according to Diagram C
  • Insert the cap nut into the clip and press this assembly into one end of the barrel.
  • Press the tip into the opposite end of the barrel.
  • Insert the refill with the spring into the barrel.
  • Insert the twist mechanism into the cap nut, over the refill and thread to the END.

Caution: If the cap is pushed too far, it will cause the twist to jam!

  • Place the cap over the exposed extension of the twist mechanism. Gently push in to close the gap..
  • Pen operates by twisting the cap end to retract or extend the refill.
  • To replace the refill, unscrew the cap. Slide out the refill. Replace with a new refill and screw the cap on.
