Diagram A / Parts Layout

Preparing the Blanks
  • Cut a 1” to 1-1/4” square (depending on your design) blank of wood to the length of the brass tube (add 1/16” for squaring off).
  • Drill a 9/16” center hole, lengthwise through the blank. Spread glue over the tube. Push the tube inside the blank with a twisting motion to spread the glue evenly throughout. Center the tube lengthwise inside the blank.
  • When the glue dries, square the ends of the blank. Use a belt/disc sander with a Universal Barrel Trimmer (optional) to trim the wood down, flush to the end of the brass.

Diagram B / Turning The Blanks

Turning the Blanks

  • Position 4-5 spacer bushings on the mandrel. Slide on one of the penlight bushings, then the wood blank, then the other penlight bushing as shown in diagram ‘B’. Add spacers as needed to allow tightening of the lock nut. Lock in place with the tail stock.
  • Turn the wood down using lathe chisels to the desired profile. Finish the blank with gradual higher grits of sandpaper and your choice of polishes and waxes.
Assembly
• Line up parts according to diagram A.
• Press the end cap into the lower end of the barrel.
• Insert the spring, open end first into the opposite end of the barrel.
• Press the top cap into the barrel over the spring.
• Insert the necklace lanyard through the hole at the upper end. Adjust the length to suit.
NOTE: Any slim writing instrument will be held captive in this device.
