Preparing the Blank

  • Cut the wooden body to the width desired. Two different lengths are required. One for the upper cap and the other for the reservoir. The length of each brass tube is the finished size of the wood.
  • Cut the wood approximately 1/16” longer than the tubes to allow material for squaring.
  • Drill a 5/16” hole through in the center of each wood blank.
  • Apply epoxy or gap-filling SG-THICK super glue.
  • Insert tube into blank hole with a twisting motion to spread the glue evenly. Center the tubes within the blanks.
  • To assure a perfect fit, square the ends to 90° with a disc sander or a 7mm barrel trimmer. Remove wood down to the actual length of the tube.

Turning the Blank

  • Proper bushings are available (PK-1216) for this project to give you a “template” to match the outside diameters of the ends, thus assuring a perfect fit with the end caps of your project.
  • Mount the bushings and the blanks on your mandrel in the order illustrated in diagram B. Note that both outside bushings are the same. Tighten lock nut on the mandrel and bring the tailstock live center up to the mandrel center. Do Not Over Tighten.
  • Turn the two pieces of wood on the mandrel to the profile of your design. Turn the wood ends down to a diameter equal to that of the bushings.
  • As with any sanding, progress through a range of grits. The type of wood used and the quality of the surface will dictate your selection.
    80-100 grit, for rough surface or when additional shaping is needed.
    150 grit, when fairly smooth and straight.
    240 grit, for final finish with most domestic woods.
    320 grit, for additional final finish of domestic woods.
    400 grit, especially for dense or oily exotic wood.
  • Try a finish of your choice, but be careful when brushing on a poly, etc., as you can stick the tube, bushings and mandrel together.

Assembly

  • Use a clamp or a vise with wooden jaws to press the parts together. Squeeze in slowly to avoid splitting the wood. Pressure must be straight along the axis of the tubes.
  • If mating wood parts are turned correctly, the assembly is relatively simple.
  • If end caps do not fit tightly in the tubes, they may be glued.
  • Align the pen parts according to the diagram above.
    • Insert the end cap into the bottom of the reservoir part and press in.
    • Pull white applicator tip out and press in the nib.
    • Insert threaded cap into the upper tube and press.
    • Insert top end cap into opposite end of upper tube and press.
    • Parts should screw together freely. Be sure rubber O-ring is mounted between two sections.
Loading the Pen with Perfume
  • Dip the applicator tip while in the pen, into the perfume bottle and hold it for one minute. This will soak up the perfume. The white applicator tip will swell and stay in place when filled with liquid.
  • Before refilling the pen, clean applicator tip by soaking it in household type alcohol.
