Diagram A / Parts List & Layout

Preparing the Blanks

  • Cut 1/2" square blanks (or use our blanks) to the length of
the brass tubes. Add 1/16" for squaring off.
  • Drill a 7mm center hole lengthwise through each blank
  • Spread glue over the tubes. Insert into the blanks with a
twisting motion to spread the glue evenly inside. Center
    tubes lengthwise inside the blanks.
  • When the glue dries, square the ends of the blanks. Use a
7 mm barrel trimmer or a belt/disc sander. Take the wood
    down flush with the tubes.

Diagram B / Turning The Blanks

Turning the Blanks

  • Place three or four standard 7mm bushings onto the mandrel, followed by either blank. Then add another 7mm bushing as the center bushing, then the second wood blank. Use additional bushings to fill the space on the shaft up to the threads.
  • Hand tighten the lock nut to hold all items in place
  • Slide the tail stock snug to the mandrel shaft, (do not over tighten, it could damage the mandrel). Lock in place.
  • Turn the wood down, flush with the bushings using lathe tools and gradual higher grits of sandpaper.
  • Sand the wood and finish with your choice of polishes or waxes. Use Shellawax cream on the lathe.

Diagram C - Assembly

Assembly

Note: When using a vise to press the parts, cover jaws to avoid damaging the plated parts.

  • Line up finished parts according to diagram C.
  • Press the tip into the lower barrel
  • Press the twist mechanism into the opposite end of the barrel as shown (brass end first), until only 11/16" of the chrome end is exposed. (see diagram C)
Note: do not push the twist mechanism past the 11/16" area, you will not be able to get them apart.
  • Push the refill guide over the end of the refill stem.
  • Hold the barrel and twist the mechanism counter clockwise until thread is at the end. Insert and screw in the refill guide to the end. Twist the assembly, the refill should extend past the pen tip.
  • Slip the center band over the twist mechanism.
  • Separate the detachable assembly (if already assembled) by pressing on the plunger and pulling apart.
  • Press the lower cap, narrow end first, into the opposite barrel.
  • Engage the swivel end by pressing the plunger into the lower cap.
  • Attach the cord into the hole in the detachable end and adjust for size.
  • To extend or retract the refill, twist in opposite direction.
