Preparing the Blank

Note: If you want to substitute wood for the rubber gripper, use all 3 bushings. Otherwise do not use the tip bushing. These instructions are for using the rubber gripper.

Diagram B / Turning The Blanks

Turning the Blanks

  • Place three or four standard 7mm bushings onto the mandrel, followed by the center bushing, the wood blank and lastly the cap bushing (the smallest in the set). Use additional bushings to fill the space on the shaft up to the threads.
  • Hand tighten the lock nut to hold all items in place.
  • Slide the tail stock snug to the mandrel shaft, (do not over tighten, it could damage the mandrel). Lock in place.
  • Turn the wood down, flush with the bushings using lathe tools and gradual higher grits of sandpaper.
  • Sand the wood and finish with one of our fine polishes or wax for a brilliant gloss.

Assembly

  • Press the tip into the front tube. Insert the rubber gripper, wide end in first, over the tube.
  • Slide the coupler band over the short end of the coupler to the shoulder. Make sure the shoulder fits inside the recess in the coupler band.
  • Press the coupler, short end into the opposite end of the brass tube.
  • Insert the refill end of the mechanism assembly into the coupler, thread it inside.
  • Press the clip/cap assembly into the narrow diameter end of the barrel.
  • Push the pencil plunger in, over the eraser.
  • Slip the barrel over the mechanism's exposed tube, past the coupler and push into the recess in the double ring coupler band.

MECHANISM FUNCTION

The mechanism has three positions. In the center position, both writing elements are concealed. Twisting the upper barrel clockwise will expose the pen tip. Twisting the upper barrel counter clockwise will expose the pencil tip. While the pencil tip is exposed, clicking the pencil plunger gently will advance the lead. By pressing and holding the plunger down, the lead can be pushed back inside the mechanism.
To replace either the mini refill, or reload the pencil with lead, slide the barrel/cap assembly off. Unscrew the mechanism assembly brass tube and pull the mechanism out. Pull the mini refill out and replace with a new one. Pull the pencil element out, drop in 0.7 mm lead and insert back into the mechanism and assemble as before. Click on the plunger and the self feed mechanism will gradually expose the lead. When done using the pencil, retract the lead and twist to a neutral position.
